‘Successful media products depend as much upon marketing and distribution as they do upon good production practices’- to what extent do you agree with this statement?

Good marketing and distribution practises are important to produce a successful movie. However usually movies depend on one or the other. Just one of these things can make the movie very successful.  There are some films which are more dependent more on the production process like having good cameras, filming in 3D and for Imax but there are also films which are totally dependent on the distribution process like good marketing strategies.

For example The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity both had a low production budget but ended up being very successful because of their good marketing strategies. Both movies were film using a digital camera which was very inexpensive to produce as a whole camera crew wasn't needed. The Blair Witch Project became such a successful movie because of its very interesting and unusual marketing strategies. Articles and missing posters were found in magazines which created a blurred line between the reality and fiction which made the people question themselves about what is going on around them. Therefore when the film came out in cinemas lots of people wanted to see it because they wanted to know wether all the information in the magazines was true. Paranormal activity also had a very good marketing campaign as they recorded the first ever screening and the reaction of people watching it. Then all the clips were put together and released as another movie trailer. This attracted the audience as they also wanted to experience what the people in the trailer experienced. Paranormal Activity was produced by Paramount Pictures which started selling movie gadgets like t-shirts which also attracted the audience. The unknown cast definitely didn't attract the audience therefore in these two movie the distribution process was more successful, mainly because of the good marketing strategies.

The Dark Knight Rises had a very high production budget of $230-250 million which is a lot for a film. The producers used the money in the best way possible as the movie became a blockbuster not so long after it came out in the cinemas. In this case I think it's both, the production and distribution which made the film so successful. However the main reason why most people watched it was because it is based on the DC comics which are already very popular. Special effects and the famous cast definitely attracted a lot of people to watch the movie. I don't think this particular movie needed such good marketing but that just made the film even more successful. The production companies prepared clues for the audience which then revealed revenant information about the film. For this movie I think the distribution and the production process both contributed to making the movie so successful worldwide.

Most Disney film are very successful but The Lone Ranger almost bankrupted the distribution and production Company. Disney uses both vertical and horizontal marketing to make sure it has a worldwide distribution. It is much easier for Disney to advertise their movies as they own their own studios, TV channel, shops and radios. The Lone Ranger had a high production budget, famous cast like Johnny Depp and good special effects also with good marketing but still almost bankrupted Disney. The reason for this could be because western movies are not so popular anymore and most probably didn't appeal to the younger audience. Overall I think the success of the film depends both on distribution and good marketing strategies
